The future of Ukraine’s energy sector: EUETH held a discussion on the challenges of the Ukrainian energy market and ways to overcome them
Prior to the Ukraine Recovery Conference, the European-Ukrainian Energy Transition Hub (EUETH), in which GOLAW is a partner, organized a discussion on the prospects of Ukraine’s energy sector and its importance on the path to EU accession.
The event emphasized the importance of close cooperation between Ukrainian and international partners to accelerate the reforms necessary to restore Ukraine’s energy market, adapt it to EU standards, and achieve climate goals. EUETH invited Ukrainian policy makers and leading private sector representatives to engage in a dialogue with EU officials to discuss ways to address these challenges.
“The transformation of the energy sector is an important task for any country, especially given the challenges Ukraine is currently facing. Long-term cooperation with international partners and key stakeholders should be central to Ukraine’s efforts to rebuild its infrastructure and decarbonize its energy supply. EUETH aims to support this process by building capacity to implement the necessary legal and economic reforms, as well as facilitating an environment for the exchange of experience between authorities, companies and researchers,” said Simon Schaefer-Stradowski, Executive Director of IKEM and one of the EUETH leaders.
Maroš Šefčovič, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, emphasized in his speech: “Since the beginning of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified aggression, the EU has demonstrated unwavering support for Ukraine and has made significant efforts to bring Ukraine closer to Europe. Building on the already accelerated market integration of Ukraine’s energy system, the energy sector will be a key driver of Ukraine’s integration into the European Union and the transformation of both the European and Ukrainian economies. By engaging relevant stakeholders and disseminating best European and global practices, platforms like EUETH help build a bridge to a common energy future.”
The event brought together more than 40 experts from various energy sectors, including high-level representatives of the main players in the Ukrainian energy market. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal also took part in the roundtable online, emphasizing the importance of partnership support for the stability and survival of the Ukrainian energy sector.
GOLAW understands the importance of restoring the country’s energy sector, actively promotes this process and provides Ukrainian and international partners with comprehensive support necessary to implement key reforms and achieve Ukraine’s energy independence.
