Attorneys of Criminal Law and White Collar Defence practice at GOLAW secured the release of a client from extradition detention in the Republic of Lithuania

In April 2025, a detention order was issued against a foreign citizen within criminal proceedings in Ukraine. Remarkably, the suspect was entirely unaware of the ongoing prosecution, only learning of the court’s decision after being detained in the Republic of Lithuania following an Interpol red notice issued at Ukraine’s request.

From the very beginning of the case, the GOLAW legal team focused on protecting the client’s fundamental rights. The defense established that the suspect’s right to legal counsel had been flagrantly violated during the initial detention hearing. Furthermore, the lawyers successfully challenged the legal grounds upon which the client had been granted the status of a suspect in the first place.

As a result of the team’s principled stance and persistent efforts, the Kropyvnytskyi Court of Appeal overturned the investigating judge’s detention order on March 17, 2026.

This ruling proved to be the turning point in the case. With the underlying detention order vacated, the extradition request lost its legal basis. Consequently, the client was released from custody in the Republic of Lithuania, fully restoring his right to liberty and security of person.

The legal team representing the client included Igor Glushko, Dmytro Zarkhin, Anastasia Miroshnychenko and Marko Kotiv.
