Will military registration be voluntary for women?

Recently, one of the most resonant issues is the issue of military registration of women. This is because from October 1, 2022, the procedure of placing women on military registration should have started. But in September of this year the Ministry of Defense postponed the registration deadline for another year – until October 1, 2023.

At the same time, on October 7, 2022, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Article 1 of the Law of Ukraine “On Military Obligation and Military Service” regarding the registration of women as liable to military service.”

This Law stipulates that women who have a specialty and/or profession specified in the list of the Ministry of Defense and who are fit for military service due to their health and age are registered as liable to military service at their will.

That is, the voluntary nature of military registration of women is established at the legislative level.

Herewith, military registration of women doctors (who have a professional (vocational-technical), professional pre-university, or higher education and have obtained a medical or pharmaceutical specialty) remains mandatory.

This Law entered into force on October 26, 2022.
